27% percent of Canadian workers describe ‘high’ to ‘extreme’ levels of stress on a daily basis, and 62% describe work as being their main source of stress. Chronic stress increases the risk of depression, heart disease, and substance abuse.
Each week, 500,000 Canadians are absent from work for mental health issues. In addition to absenteeism, psychological health issues have tremendous impacts on an organization’s bottom line due to presenteeism – or losses in productivity.
Every year, 1 out of 5 working Canadians will meet criteria for a mental health illness or disorder – with anxiety and depression at the top of the list. Conservatively, lifetime prevalence of mental health issues is 50%.
